THE EFFECTS OF SOCIO-CULTURAL PRACTICES ON WOMEN IN NAWL EL- SADAAWI’S WOMAN AT POINT ZERO AND AKACHI EZEIGBO’S CHILDREN OF THE EAGLE

Abstract

This research work exposes the effects of socio-cultural practices on women in Nawal El- Sadaawi’s Woman at Point Zero and Akachi Ezeigbo’s Children of The Eagle. The issue and effects of socio-cultural practices on women is considered by female writes as headaches of every society today. Owing to the above mentioned issues, their writings aimed at eradicating issues like; gender crisis, gender discrimination, gender violence and cultural discrimination that has affected the female folks psychological and emotionally.  In Sadaawi’s Woman at Point Zero, the author portrays how Firdaus is oppressed by patriarchy, domestic violence, hypocritical religion, classism, sexual slavery, surveillance. Akachi therefore stereotypes men as evil that are driven by sexual desires, and imposes violent to their wives. The study therefore recommended that the effects of socio-cultural practices that affect the women should be looked into.  Men and women should also enjoy equal rights and women’s decisions should be respected in the family meetings and they should not be treated less important.
