Abstract: This seminar work discusses A Critique Of Niccolo Machiavelli’s Notion Of Human Nature. It is a critical investigation and description of Niccolo Machiavelli’s conception or notion of Human Nature, it’s philosophical underpinnings, its rationale and applications. Machiavelli’s plausible idea of human nature was an attempt to offer contribute to the government political system of the Italians, an idea for which a prince could used to rule his people perfectly. It was the product of his brain-work that a ruler must not be moral, but must appear to have them. Hence, the work seeks to investigate Machiavelli’s claims or notions of human nature in a bid of pointing out his flaws and proffering solution if any to Machiavelli misconception of human nature, by way of analysis (critical), with the end product of stating it’s implications and relevance.

Introduction

Philosophers are both effects and causes: effects of their social circumstances and of politics and institutions of their time; causes (if they are fortunate) of belief which would mould(s) the politics and institutions of later ages. In most histories of philosophy, each philosopher does not appear in a vacuum; his opinions are not set forth unrelated. Thus, each philosopher is an outcome of a cultural milieu, a man in whom was crystallized and consent rated thoughts and feelings, which in vague and diffused form, was common to the age of which he was a part (Russell, 491).
