CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Generalizations about the role and status of women in traditional African societies, as for other aspects of African life is concerned are not easy to make because Africa is not one cultural area. It is marked by great cultural and linguistic diversities and any statement which can be made about one tribe may altogether be inapplicable to another, even in one geographical sub-region.

A proper understanding of the status and role of women in traditional African societies therefore involves an appreciation of the different cultural patterns within which they are brought up and of the family and tribal customs in each of those multitudinous societies which degree the exact place given to each member, the respect due to each and the duties and privileges which membership of the family confers.

1.1     Background to the Study

In spite of the changes in modern African society in-respect to women’s role literary writers still find it necessary to write about women’s role in Africa, not minding the new status of women now in Africa because traditional and cultural views about women’s every day to women performing their role effectively in the society.

This research is also to promote the role of women in African society.

1.2     Statement of the Problem

In every research, problems arise and these problems pose a lot of questions to the researcher whose sole purpose is to make sure that the problems posed are solved to the best of his/her findings.

This research therefore, will endeavour to answer different questions bordering on the role of women in different areas of life for clarification of what the role of women is all about. These questions include in general;

What place do women occupy in the African society? What was their place before now, and where do they intend to reach?

In an attempt to give appropriate answers to these questions, this research work will carry out thorough investigations on the role of women in African society thereby making references to the works of other researchers and scholars who have worked on the role of women in African society. Also, few works of AmaAidoo and Alice Obongeren will be used in solving these questions so as to get information on the role of women in African society.
