Poverty And Violence In Chris Egbarevba’s Canopy Of Thunder and the Labourer’s Blood

Abstract: This research work analyses the theme of Poverty And Violence In Chris Egbarevba’s Canopy Of Thunder and the Labourer’s Blood.  From the study, it has shown that poverty and corruption are the two major issues affecting the Nigerian society. In the same vein, the misuse of government powers for other purposes such as repression of political opponents and general police brutality is considered as political corruption affecting our Nigerian society. The novelist has also shown that most economic political and social problems in under developed societies like Nigeria emanate from our corrupt and selfish leaders who exploit the poor without consideration. Some of these problems according to Egharevba include lack of accountability, diversion of public resources to private ownership, different types of discriminations, ethnicity, lack of competence, inefficiency and exploitation.  

In the same vein, there are many causes of poverty, violence, political corruption such as ineffective political processes, ineffective political financing and poverty. The study also shows the different forms of corruption, violence, disorders and also what other the author entails as being evil of corrupt practices in African society and it effects of poverty to the poor which causes them psychological and social disordered. The author also analyses the effects and consequences of corruption, poverty, exploitation and violence by agitating the poor Nigerians to seek for their rights through violence which can easily wipe out the obnoxious problems of exploitation, corruption and suppression for the betterment of the country.
