EFFECT OF GENDER ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
Abstract
This study was designed to assess gender and academic performance of Secondary School students in Biology on Onna Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. Two null hypothesis were formulated to guide the study. The research design adopted was survey research. The target population of this study was all students in Senior Secondary two classes in the study area. One hundred (100) students were randomly selected from Ten (10) schools within the area. A Biology Achievement Test (BAT) was the Instrument used for data collection. Independent t – test statistical techniques was used to analyse the null hypotheses.
Findings revealed that male student perform better than female students in Biology. Also male students perform significantly better than female student in rural schools. Recommendations include that parent should send their children to school irrespective of gender. Again, counseling services should be made available in our secondary schools to help students choose their subjects without difficulties.
