Environmental Variables And Effective Teaching Of Physical And Health Education In Secondary Schools
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine Environmental Variables and Effective Teaching of Physical and Health Education in Etinan Local Government Area. Two hundred (200) students were randomly selected from four (4) secondary schools in all the public secondary schools. Three research questions were formulated to guide the study. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population of this study consists of all the students in Junior Secondary School Two (JSS2) in the study area. The instrument used for collecting data for the study was questionnaire; the data were analyzed using simple percentage. The result revealed that students from school located in urban areas learn effectively than those located in rural areas. It was also revealed that there is a positive influence of standard sport laboratory on effective teaching of Physical and Health Education. Also, analysis showed that the effective teaching of Physical and Health Education requires functional school library. It was recommended among others that, Government should create conducive environment in secondary schools level that would familiar student’s acquisition and development of cognitive, psychomotor and affective skills.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The influence of environmental variables and effective teaching of Physical and Health Education before now has been considered as one of the factors that have negatively affected educational system in secondary schools. The focal points considered in this study are to find out how well equipped sport laboratory, library and conducive classrooms affect effective teaching of Physical and Health Education as environmental factors of the school, Gogbo (2008) regards school as institution made up of buildings where there are classrooms with inner activities and agenda for knowledge and skills.
Udom (2007) noted that environment of the learners is one of the strong determinants in learning and that stimulating environment promotes learning than non stimulating one. According to her, factors such as qualified teachers, classroom building, sport laboratory, library, enough play grounds should be put in place to ensure effective learning and teaching good academic performance and give optimal level of achievement in a given subject area. Hence for the environment to be attained, the learning environment should be conducive enough for the learner.
According to Inyang (2008), school is an environment which constitutes all what surrounds the learners in the course of learning. The environment embraces such provisions as good roads, electricity, well-equipped classrooms. Therefore, when the required facilities are not put in the right place in the surrounding of the learners, they will have difficulty in understanding concepts because they are abstract to them . for instance, when the equipment are not available and well equipped, the students will not understand Physical and Health Education concept shallowly and that would lead to poor performance.
Based on the above background, this study was conducted to determined how school environmental factors like well equipped sport laboratory influence the effective teaching of Physical Health Education students in Etinan Local Government Area.
1.2 Statement of the problem
There are growing rate complains of poor effective teaching of Physical and Health education in both internal and external examinations. These complain are being made by students, parents and the general public, curriculum developers are not left out despite all the efforts that they have jointly made with the government for educational objectives to be achieved.
Based on the massive complains, the researcher noticed that an imbalance between environmental variables and the achievement of educational objectives has been created and therefore seek to offer solution and suggestions to the problem by focusing his study on effective teaching and school environment.
Micheal (2009) opined that lack of qualified teachers, unavailability of facilities and poor teaching methods affects effective teaching in schools.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this study is to find out how environmental variables can affect effective teaching of Physical and Health Education in secondary schools in Etinan Local Government Area. Specifically the objective of the study is to:
(i) To ascertain the influence of school location on the effective teaching of Physical and Health Education in Secondary school.
(ii) To find out if the use of sport laboratory influence effective teaching of Physical and Health Education in secondary school.
(iii) To find out if school library influence effective teaching of Physical and Health Education in secondary school.
1.4 Significance of the Study
The study will be relevant to researchers who are interested in knowing how the various school environmental factors affects effective teaching. It will also help the teachers to be aware of those factors that influence effective teaching in Physical and Health Education.
The findings will expose the curriculum developers to know the conditions necessary for good effective teaching as well as educating students in Physical and Health Education in making right choices of school in terms of infrastructural and instructional facilities availability.
