ABSTRACT: The study was carried out to investigate Deviant Behaviours And Academic Performance In Physical And Health Education Among Primary Schools. Research questions and research hypotheses were formulated by the researcher to guide the study. The study adopted a survey research design. The population of the study consists of all the pupils in all the public primary schools in Mbo Local Government Area numbering two thousand one hundred and thirty six (2,136) pupils in the twenty five (25) public primary schools in the study area. A sample size of one hundred and twenty pupils was selected through simple random sampling technique from ten primary schools. Data collected were through a structured questionnaire Titled: deviant behavior identification questionnaire and Physical education achievement test were the instruments for data collection.

The data generated from the instrument were analyzed using independent t-test statistic. The result revealed that; there is a significant difference between academic performance in Physical  and health education among primary school pupils who attend classes regularly and those who absent themselves from class and that there is a significant difference in academic performance in physical and health education among primary school pupils who come to class early and those who come to class late in Mbo Local Government Area. It was therefore recommended that School authorities should enforce compliance to school rules and regulations among students to check the incidence of truancy primary school pupils.

Deviant Behaviours And Academic Performance In Physical And Health Education Among Primary Schools

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Every individual grows towards becoming a functioning member of the society. In the process of growth he gains empowerment through school learning. Stakeholders in education industry such as government, parent, missionaries, and proprietors of schools had invested huge sum of money and materials to ensure high performance of pupils under their care (Bola, 2003).

There has always been diversity in the performance of pupils in primary schools. While some pupils perform very well, others do the opposite and some cases, pupils are withdrawn from school for low performance. Various reasons have been attributed to this failure. Among them include the different levels of intelligence, some socio-economic factors, the school environment, pupils’ attitudes, and pupils’ deviant behaviors. Deviant behavior simply means behaviour that pupils do that goes against the standard of the society, regardless whether the action is legal or illegal. Michael, (2004) defines deviant behavior as that type of behavior that is contrary to norms and the rules of the society. Such behavior or activities includes, crime, drunkenness, indiscipline, drug abuse, examination dishonesty, truancy and many others. It is reveal that pupils fails massively internal and externally administered examination in Akwa Ibom State and Mbo Local Government Area in particular.

Stakeholders in the education industries such as parent, school authorities, teachers, officials of the ministry of education and the pupils themselves are restive and concerned at the high casualty rate of Physical and health education pupils in public examination. Nigeria society today is developing; therefore, it should stimulate the spirit of patriotism and lay the solid foundation for national and international understanding and corporation in pupils. Due to this fact, the education of the youth is very important in other to ensure the citizens to the social and economic development of the country as well as raising the standard of living generally.

According to Ehigie (2001), the family as agent of socialization could have significant impact on the child. This is evident from the fact that it is the first place where the child learns about leadership and what it takes, also basic skills and behavior pattern taught by parents in the home. The school as an organization should be able to deliver civilitarian services which geared towards the betterment of the society, such as the ability to teach morals, honesty, regularity, loyalty and dedication. This implies that the school should be able to produce disciplined pupils who will later become good citizens who are free from any deviant act or behaviour of any kind.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In educational system, success is measured by academic performance or how well a pupils meets the standard set out by institution. The menace of failure among the young school pupils has stared the parents, government and stakeholders in the face. There is a consensus of opinion about the fallen standard of education as a big problem that is hindering the posterity of the Nigerian nation in terms of quality man power resources. Many factors have been blame for this menace of poor academic performance among pupils in primary schools, these factors includes; lack of proper teaching method, lack of instructional facilities. It was on this background that the researcher was interested to investigate whether deviant behavior does influence the academic performance of pupils in primary schools in physical and health education.

Since all the efforts made so far have not been able to solve the problem of poor academic performance of pupils in Physical and health education, the researcher is therefore motivated to find out if deviant behaviour does influence pupils’ performance in Physical and health education in Mbo Local Government Area.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study was to examine the influence of deviant behaviour on the academic performance in Physical and health education among primary schools in Mbo local government area.

Specifically, the study sought to:

  1. Determine the influence of absenteeism on pupils’ academic performance in Physical and health education among primary schools
  2. Determine the influence of lateness to school on the academic performance in Physical and health education among primary schools

1.4 Significance of the Study

The study will be of benefit to pupils, parents, teachers, and the curriculum developers and the society at large.

To pupils, it is hoped that the result will help to uncover hidden potentials in pupils. By seeing the influence of certain behaviors like aggressiveness, altruistic tendencies, truancy and their interactional effects on fellow pupils, teachers, parents and on their learning potentials.

The results of this study will help teachers to understand more and will find it easy to deal with different categories of learners from different homes.

The curriculum planners would benefits since it will provide a basis for them to design the curriculum, bearing in mind various behaviour of individuals and possibly plan realistic strategy for achieving the objective and goals of education. Thus, the society stand to benefit from this study, as there will be farewell to some of the unwanted behaviours that will tend to hinder the performance of the pupils.

The knowledge gained from this study will assist government to design policies and programmes which will help enhance family cohesion so parent will be able to relate better with their children, this will help the development of well-behaved individuals by modifying their behaviour properly.

It will also act as an eye opener to parents for them to know that a close relationship with their children should be developed to check deviant behaviour that affects their wards performance in school.

1.5 Research Questions

In other to achieve the derived objective the following research questions were raised to guide the study:

  1. To what extent does the academic performance of pupils who absent themselves from schools differs from those who attend school regularly in Physical and health education?
  2. To what extent does the academic performance of pupils who go to school late differs from their counterpart who goes to school early in Physical and health education?

1.6 Research Hypotheses

The following null hypotheses were postulated to guide the study:

  1. There is significant difference in the academic performance of pupils in Physical and health education between those who absent themselves from schools and those who attend school regularly.
  2. There is significant difference in the academic performance of pupils in Physical and health education between those who go to school late differs from their counterpart who goes to school early.

1.7 Limitation of the Study

In conducting a research study of this kind, there are bound to be some challenges. Thus, some of the challenges encountered in the course of this study are as follows:

  1. Time constraint: time duration allowed for the completion of this research work could not be enough for the research to have a wider scope. Hence some schools were sampled and pupils out of all the schools in the area.
  2. Financial problem: this constituted one of the major limitations to the researcher especially as the researcher had to source for relevant materials on the topic and visit the sampled schools under the investigation for data collection.
  3. Insufficient references materials: this also was a problem as the researcher needed enough relevant literature on the topic.
