Abstract: The study examined Parenting Styles And Students’ Academic Performance In Economics. It was conducted in Ikono Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State. Two research questions and hypothesis were formulated to guide the study. the study research design were employed in the study. one thousand one hundred and two (1,102) students in economic formed the population of the study. a simple random sampling technique were used to select two hundred (200) students for the study. Economic Achievement Test (EAT) were the major instrument used for data collection. The data generated from the instrument were analyze using independent t-test statistics.
The result shows that students from democratic home performed better than those from neglectful home. It also released that students from authoritarian home performed better than their counterpart from indulgent home. It is therefore, recommended that parents should adopt a good parenting style that will improve their children academic performance in school.

1.1 Background to the study
The social climate or environment in which individuals find him or herself to a large extent determines his or her behaviour and personality development. Consequently, parental guidance and discipline usually influence the behaviour of the children.
According to Murdock (2005), family is a social group characterized by common residence, economics co-operation and reproduction. It include adult of both sexes, at least two or more maintain a socially approved sexually relationship and one or more children own or adopted by the sexually cohabiting adults, the family provide for the physical maintenance of the children often them first and most continuing social contacts and gives them affection and other-emotional satisfaction including quality education that will last for a life time teaching the most of social requirement of their behaviours and often put them in contact with other socializing institutions.
It is important that students come closely in contact with their parents during the period of infancy to adulthood. The warmth which can only be provided by the parent’s gives the children sense of belonging and affection which enhances mental, physical moral and educational growth.
If students denied this much need parental affection and warm during the vital period of their lives they become negatively affected in all aspects of life including education (Coleman, 2003).
According to Bell (2009), parents devote a lot of resource to their children’s education because they believed that good educational system provides a functional citizen. The academic performance of student to a large extent depends on parenting style which the parent used in returning their children in the home. A child whose parent neglect or indulgent does not performed well in school.
Adeyinka (2012) reported that maladaptive behaviour arise when parent lack responsibility of their parenthood and the children that are raised from economically disadvantaged background are more likely to have poor academic performance because they lack food, clothing and shelter. It is obvious that families have subsentical influence on a child academic performance. Education is described as the best investment that one can ever make as educated children will be able to have a good job meaningful life for themselves as increase the national productivity. The National Policy on Education (2004). Refers to education as the instrument for change. Education prepares one for better life and it is a process of accumulating knowledge for future use. Therefore, parenting role is to aid their wards to be educated.
However, academic performance describes the maximum level of performance which student attain in school academic activities it gives very necessary support and opportunities by parent which is highly influence by the parenting style.? According to Peters (2003) the physical environment under which a child studies can influence his or her learning as well as academic performance in school. In this regard, parent have a lots to do to ensure that the mental emotional, and psychological balance, value, orientation, aspiration and personality as well as academic status of student are properly developed in life. Mean while, given the background, this study was conducted to substantiate the above divergent claim by determining the underlying influence of parenting style and academic performance of students in economics in Ikono Local Government Area.

1.2 Statement of the problem
The main problem of this study is low academic performance of economics in both internal and external examination in selected secondary school, Based on this, there is need to investigate the relationship between parenting style and academic performance in economics which is one of the variables that determine academic performance of students in secondary schools in our own environment. Besides, observations have shown that not all the student are bright, some are dull, some are average and few bright, the fact that some student perform poorly academically may not necessary be as a result to poor quality of teaching and lack of basic teaching and learning facilities in the school.
Be that as it may, the researcher interest is to determine whether autocratic parent, democratic parent, as well as neglectful parenting has any influence on academic performance of students in economics in Ikono Local Government Area.
