CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1     Background to the Study

Education is the process of facilitating learning or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs and habits. Education takes place frequently under the guidance of educators but learners may also educate themselves. The objective of education is always evaluated using examination. According to Uduh (2009) examination is the process of finding out how much of the objectives of education has been achieved, that is how the specific task a learners has learnt. Similarly, Ekpo (2014) defined education has as a tool of measuring and judging the standard of education in any country.

Examination could be internally conducted. Internal examination are usually developed and ministered by schools using teachers-made test. These could be conducted weekly, terminally or at the end of the school year. The National Council for Colleges of Education (NCCE) have given College of Education, Afaha Nsit the right to offer internal examinations which are often used to set a standard for school performance as well as student’s performances and also used to award certificate just like other certificate examination bodies such as West African Examination Council (WAEC) and National Examination Council (NECO).

The controversy regarding the performance of students in Political science department today is a general issue. There is a lot of disagreement as to which of these examination bodies produce the better result. The general conclusion, however, is that students performs poorly in the department in both Political Science courses and other courses including Education and General courses. Stakeholders have continued to trade blames on the causes of failure or poor performance of students in public examination on parents, society, and the students with the teachers having a lion share of the blame. As accusations and counter-accusations on who is to be blame on the poor performance of students persists, the fact remains that all the stakeholders have a role to play in solving the problems of abysmal failure of students in public examination.

Personal observation has revealed a general poor performance in Political Science courses over the years and high grade in Educational courses thereby making some students to dropout while others stay longer than the recommended period of studies in the department. This then formed the background that this study was carried out to compare academic performance of students in Political Science courses between 2012/2013 and 2014/2015 academic year in Akwa Ibom State College of Education, Afaha Nsit.

1.2     Statement of the Problem

Every child needs to be equipped with the essential tools of knowledge, according to the varying extent of their abilities so that they can make contributions to the economy and the government of their community which will improve their quality of life and self-fulfillment. However, the yearly percentage grandaunt in Political Science Department of college of Education Afaha Nsit tends to be different between various academic years.

These upward trends of differences in the number of graduates between various years motivate the researcher to carry out a comparative study of students’ performance in political science in 2012/2013 and 2014/2015 academic year in Akwa Ibom State college of Education, Afaha Nsit.
