ABSTRACT: This study examined School Discipline and Classroom Behaviour during Agricultural Science Lessons among Secondary School Students. Three null hypotheses were formulated in line with the specific objectives to guide the study. The survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised 536 SS1 students offering Agricultural Science in the study Area. The sample size of 180 SS1 students was used for the study. The instrument used for data collection was “School Discipline and Students Classroom Behaviour Questionnaire” (SDSCBQ). The data collection was analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC).

The result showed that there is a significant relationship between obedience to school rules/regulations, punctuality to school, regularity in schools and students classroom behaviour respectively. It was concluded that school discipline has a relationship on students’ classroom behaviour. It was therefore recommended that school authorities should enforce compliance to check the incidence of indiscipline behaviour among them.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

The spate of anti-social behaviour among youths is on the increase, it is commonplace to read about brutal attacks by students on their teachers and or fellow student’s. Put differently, student apart from legitimate academic activities engage themselves in nefarious and nocturnal organization that have bizarre consequences on them and the society at large. Such incidents among many others depict the alarming rate at which discipline behaviour are on the decline among youths.

The existence of unwanted traits and tendencies like gangsterism, rape, examination practices etc among secondary school students is viewed with great concern. This is because the future of any society rests on this category of and on the school, which plays the role of a cleaning house for the preparation of youths for adults’ roles (Isangedighi, 2008).

The existence of indiscipline behaviour among secondary school students has become a source of concern to parents, teachers, counselors, social workers, administration, and psychologist. Hence the need for the study.

Owan (2006) defines school discipline as a form of discipline appropriate to the regulation of children and the maintenance of order in the school. He further added that, discipline was conceptualized as the observance of school rules and regulations, time management and administrations of punishment. However, he further perceived academic performance in this study as the degree of achievement by students in their classroom lesson delivery, class assessment tests, beginning of term exams, midterm exams, terminal and national examinations. Thomas (2008) described performance as action of a person or a group when given a learning task in the classroom setting.

Maduakonam (2010) observed that, three types of misbehaviors which are regarded as indiscipline for the educators in the classroom include; misbehavior that inhibits the learner’s own learning, misbehaviors which are disrespectful, defiant or abusive to the commitments intentionally or un-intentionally. He further stated in a clear term, some of these classroom misbehavior which he believes can impact negatively on the morale of the student himself and mentioned them as follows;

  • A learner consistently comes to class late and disrupts the flow of the class.
  • He/She is not listening and ask questions that have already been answered
  • Some may be called out while class is on.
  • Another one defies the teacher and refuses to follow instructions.
  • Another one moves around in the class distracting others.
  • He/she writes graffiti on the school properties.

The above stated characteristics are the classroom misbehaviors among the students during teaching and learning.

According to Isangedighi (2008), discipline includes a branch of knowledge, training that develops self-control, punctuality, character, orderliness or efficiency, strict control or punishment and a system of rules and regulations. Good discipline is considered to be one of the major attribute of effective schools and classroom management and many failing schools have been blamed for lack of discipline (Ncharam, 2006).

Based on this background, the researcher therefore seeks to examine the influence of school discipline and classroom behavior during agricultural science lesson among secondary school students in Oruk Anam Local Government Area.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The problem of indiscipline in schools in a classroom setting has persisted over the years. These acts have been either carried out individually by the students or as a group which result in rioting or revolts into our educational system. There is no doubt that students indiscipline generally constitute a trait to effective teaching and learning in agricultural science.

It is therefore observed that, the issue of indiscipline by students in the classroom setting, during agricultural science lesson delivery has been blamed on school management, administrators, educators and teachers. The academic performance and classroom behaviors of students has become a major problem to be considered such as disobeying school rules and regulations, lateness to schools, irregularity in schools, disruptive behaviors such as disrespect, fighting, truancy, cultism, drug abuse, raping, kidnapping, vandalism, stealing among others.

The aforementioned factors become the proactive measure taken to ensure that school discipline has been put in place and also to ensure that effective teaching and learning of agricultural science is rooted in our future leaders. In order to address indiscipline in schools urgent steps are needed to salvage and alleviate these conditions since agricultural science remain one of the core subject offered by students in secondary schools. Based on this backdrop, the researcher seeks to examine the influence of school discipline and classroom behavior during agricultural science lesson among secondary school students.
