ABSTRACT: The study was designed to investigate Computer Literacy And Science Teaching Among Secondary School Teachers In Oron Local Government Area. Two research questions were raised in the study. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study consists of all Science teachers in Oron Local Government Area. The total of eighty (80) sciences teachers constituted the population of the study. The sample size consisted of 20 science teachers were chosen for the study Area. The instrument used for data collection in the study was a structured questionnaire titled; computer literacy and science teaching of science questionnaire (CLASTSQ). Data collected were analyzed using Simple Percentage.

Findings show a very high level of computer literacy among science teachers in secondary schools, also the findings revealed that computer literacy significantly affect teaching effectiveness in secondary schools among science teachers. It was recommended among others that In-service training, seminars, workshops and conferences should be organized by the government and professional bodies like Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), computer institutes, etc. on computer literacy programme.

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

In recent times the world has witnessed a rapid increase in technological innovations, this era ushered in the advent of computer among other modern technologies in the society. At present the knowledge of computer is required in every part of human endeavours, such as industries engineering, agriculture, education etc. also, the use of theses computer has imparted positively in teaching methodology, research and developments, information technology and other related areas.

The integration of computer into the teaching and learning process in Nigeria Institutions (Nursery, Primary Post-primary and tertiary) is a very welcomed development towards, improvement and advancement of education in line with the global standard. Akeem (2006) asserted that, the integration of computer in school system helps the students to learn independently, be updated with the school information and stand a better chance to obtain better academic achievement, since the world itself id technologically inclined. He went further to say that the knowledge of computer will also help the teachers in preparing the lesson content, assist in curriculum design and stand a chance of delivery their lessons to the students in a more effective and comprehensive manner.

Abolade and Yusuf (2005) also asserted that the knowledge of computer and other ICT technologies is an essential tool in any educational system. the integration of computers in educations setting have the potential of being used to meet the learning needs of individual students, promote equality of education opportunities; offer high quality learning materials, increase self efficacy and independence of learning’s among students, and improve teachers professional development in the area of lesson delivery and competency.

Adebayo (2008) asserted that, the function of teaching in education process is considered paramount especially when are considered teaching and learning process as the requisition of knowledge and skills member of the society. he went further to say that the comprehensive knowledge of computer make the teacher to stand a chance of promoting effective teaching, organizing lesson content to suit individual needs and help in the actualization of these educational objective to efficiency use computer to deliver certain objectives. it can also be refers to the comfort level someone can use the computer and its, application in solving specific problems. it involves being able to operate the computer efficiently without an aid and manipulate the software associated with it (Terry 2004).

Nkemi (2006) opined that computer literacy s the skills and knowledge an individual possess which enable him to perform certain functions in any given process using the computer, computer literacy is of great importance  in education, its applications in classroom instruction has transformed teaching and learning; the skills and knowledge from computer has improved learning outcome and information sharing.

According to Wart (2006) the definitions that are included in computer literacy are as follows depending on the context, knowledge and skills required the ability to control and programme computer for personal, academic and professional goals; the ability to use a variety of computer software applications within a personal academic and professional context; the ability to make use of ideas from the world of computer programming and computer application as part of an individual’s strategy for retrieving information. Communication and problems solving, he concluded by saying that, the need for computer literacy cannot be underestimated since its main objectives is to facilitate faster and better comprehension and application of the subject matter in such a way to obtain maximum possible output from the teaching and learning process.

Nwachukwo (2005) opined that with the changes in the forms, formats and expression of information, it is therefore of paramount important for teachers to adopt themselves to new roles and skills technologically in other to cope with the inputing changes.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The improvement in the development of computer usage has been of a great deal. It is believed that this improvement has not been fact in the area of academic. Most teachers and students known how to operate this computers, but its contribution to learning and teaching process has not been strongly felt; which is why this study is being set up to investigate the impact of computer literacy in teaching.

One of the major fact of the Nigerian Philosophy of education is the building of a just and egalitarian society and land bright and full of opportunities for all citizens. Therefore, computer literacy among secondary school teachers, should be seen as an invaluable prerequisite that would help facilitate the teaching and learning procedure in the modern age of information explosion.

Computer literacy is of great important in education but it is faced with numerous problems ranging from lack of funds for accessories, lack of resources, personnel, non-utilization of the computers for the teaching and learning process and teachers unwillingness to familiarized themselves with the technologies. it was at this background that the researcher was interested to examine computer literacy and science teaching among science teachers in secondary schools in Oron Local Government Area.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine computer literacy and science teaching among science teachers in secondary schools in Oron Local Government Area.

Specifically, the study sought to:

  1. Ascertain the level of computer literacy among science teachers in secondary schools in Oron Local Government Area.
  2. Examine the influence of computer literacy on teaching effectiveness among science teachers in secondary schools in Oron Local Government Area.

1.4 Significance of the Study

The study will be of great significant to the students, teachers, parents, and the ministry of education.

To the students, they will see the need of participating in the use of computers during instructional process.

It will create awareness among the teachers about the need of using the computer packages in the process of lesson delivery.

The school administrations will see the need for the maintenance of materials provided by the government inorder to make the teachers more effective in the delivery of the instructional content. Parents will see the need to encourage their wards to be technological inclined to match the changing trend in the society and the world at large.

The findings from this study will see the needs for the provision of adequate computer resources and other school facilities that will assist the teachers to teach the students effectively.

1.5 Research Questions

In other to achieve the derived objectives the following research questions were raised to guide the study.

  1. What is the level of computer literacy among science teachers in secondary school in Oron Local government Area?
  2. To what extent does computer literacy affect teaching effectiveness among science teachers in secondary schools in Oron Local Government Area?

1.6 limitation of the Study

Financial constraint was the major limitation which hampered the effective movement of the researcher during data acquisition, lack of references materials which would have assisted the research in completing the research work in time.

1.7 delimitation of the study

The study was delimited to computer literacy and effective teaching of science subject among secondary schools teachers.

1.8 Definitions of Terms

Computer Literacy: computer literacy as used in the study refers to the knowledge and skills that an individual has, which makes him/her to be able to handle computer programmes in solving of specific problems.

Computer: computer is an electronic device that is capable of accepting data, process these data to produce the needed result or information.

Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI): Computer assisted instruction refers to the use of computer packages in the process of instructional delivery. Teaching Effectiveness: Teaching Effectiveness as used in the study refers to the systematic process of delivering of lesson or concept to the learners in the manner that facilitate proper understanding.
