TEACHERS’ CHARACTERISTICS AND LEARNING EFFECTIVENESS IN ECONOMICS AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine Teachers’ Characteristic and Learning Effectiveness in Economics among Secondary School Students in Oruk Anam Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom state. Three research questions were formulated to guide the study. Survey research design was used for the study. The population of the study comprised of the secondary schools in the study area with a total population of 3,200 students. 200 Economics student were selected from ten (10) public secondary schools to form a sample size through stratified random sampling technique. Economics Achievement Test was the major instrument for the study, though personal interview and observation were also used, Independent t-test was to calculate the respondent of the students. From the analysis, it was indicated that teachers characteristic really influence learning effectiveness in Economics. Finally, it was recommended that an Economics should be comparative in other to bring learning to the climax and review all secrete to the students for effective learning.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The quality of teaching depends on love, dedication and devotion of the teacher towards the subject. The quality of any teaching program cannot rise above the quality and character of its teacher. It is the teacher who is responsible for influencing a students’ learning of the subject.
Character can be positive (value) or negative (prejudice) according to Baird (2000). It is the framework of social psychology as a subjective or mental preparation of action. It defined outward and visible posture and human beliefs. The character of a teacher will be determined by what that teacher will see, hear, think and work or do. They are rooted in experience and do not become automatic routine conduct. It means that teacher prevailing tendency to respond favourably or unfavourably to an object (person or group of people, institutions or events).
Moreover, effective study of the teachers’ characters towards learning cannot be overemphasized in order to combat with the present fallen stand of education in the country, oftenly, the failure of students in economics over the years has only been attributed to the bad character of teachers towards the subject. Therefore this study was designed to investigate the influence of teachers’ characteristics and learning effectiveness in Economics among Secondary School students in Oruk Anam Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Due to the present poor performance of students in Economics and the fallen standard of education at large, it is quite problematic for education researchers to predict the possible solution to this issue. It is obvious that most of the economics students are only bear the name without having and acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills which they supposed to acquire at their level.
Moreover, all those default has always been accredited to students alone without considering the second party being the teachers. It is therefore to this and that this research seeks to investigate the influence of teachers’ characteristics and learning effectiveness in Economics among Secondary School Students in Oruk Anam Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of this study is to investigate the teachers’ characteristics and learning effectiveness in Economics among Secondary School Students in Oruk Anam Local Government Area.
Specifically, then study seeks to:
(i) Examine the influence of teachers’ qualification on the learning effectiveness in Economics among Secondary School Students.
(ii) Examine the influence of teachers’ teaching experience on the learning effectiveness in Economics among Secondary School Students.
(iii) Ascertain the influence teachers’ competency and learning effectiveness in Economics among Secondary School Students.
