ABSTRACT: This research work explored the Theme of Violence and Negligence of the Masses in Festus Iyayi’s Violence and Chinua Achebe’s A Man Of The People. In view of the two novels in this study, the study has shown that violence and negligent are the major challenges confronting the Nigerian society since her independence. The study also revealed  that, these violence and negligence affecting the masses in the society pass through the employees and corrupt leaders who only go into politics not to rule the society, but to enrich themselves and abandoned the poor masses without care and favour as seen in the two novels under investigation.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1     Background to the Study

Violence and negligence are serious problems confronting many societies of the world today. It is also a problem that is almost as old as mankind himself. According to Walby, “where violence and negligence happen, there is always a code of silence involving the victims and perpetration when it is perpetrated” (4). There are diverse reasons why violence still continue to thrive and these reasons includes, unequal power relation between men and men, biological differences between males and females, negatives and traditional practices, which are affecting the females or the masses in the society.

According to Bloom, there are different types of violence such as, punching, bullying physical fights (14). Generally, anything that results to injury or damage may be described as violence. On the other hand, negligence is the state of abandonment without any attention given to a group of people person or thing in any particular society studies have shown that, violence and negligence globally results to death. According to Wikepedia, 1.28 million people in 2003 die as a result of violence. In Africa, out of every 100,000 people each year an estimated 60.9% die violently while others die of negligent.

According to Feinman of the Rusters University law, the core idea of negligence is that people should exercise reasonable attitude when they act by such account of the potential harm they might for secretly cause to other people. Violence is an acts of aggression imposed on a person group or community, which produces or a produces psychological damage physical harm, sexual sufferings, threats death or arbitrary deprivation of liberty whether in a public or private setting.

1.2     Statement of the Problem

Violence is a problem that is bedeviling the Nigerian society, Africa and the world as a whole negligence is the state of abandonment without any attention, appropriate care and consideration given to a person or group of people. Negligence always leads to violence and physiological problem.

Despite the geographical re-assembling of the Nigerian nation in 1967-1970, the social and political behaviour that caused the war is a result of negligence that is imposed in the society or the masses.

Therefore, when one is neglected one can cause violence which can change one’s world view and outlook on life. For instance, a situation where a person is being controlled by another without appropriate attention can therefore create a feeling of hopelessness frustration, oppression and death because of violence and negligence.
