Home Variable And Academic Performance Of Pupils In Health Education
Abstract: The study was undertaken to determine the influence of home variables and academic performance of pupils in Health Education in Primary Schools in Ini Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. A survey research design was used. Eight thousand, one hundred and thirty six (8,136) primary five pupils from 55 public primary schools in the area formed the population of the study. The sample size of the study was 200 primary five pupils from 10 selected primary schools in the study area. Simple random sampling technique was used. Two research questions and null hypotheses were formulated for the study. The instrument used for data collection was achievement test called “Health Education Achievement Test (HEAT)”. Data collected were analyzed using t-test method. The results from the analysis revealed that home variables such as parents educational background and parents economic status has significant influence on academic performance of pupils in Health Education. Based on findings it was recommended among others that parents should ensure they try their best in providing adequate learning materials for their children irrespective of their economic status for better academic performance.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Home variables are seen as the total conditions that surround one’s birth, survival and existence at one’s home environment. A home is a place where one lives permanently, especially as a member of a family or household. It is a place of residence or refuge. A home is not a mere transient shelter. Home environment is the surroundings where one lives. According to Anene (2005) environment is the aggregate of all internal and external conditions affecting the existence, growth and welfare of organisms.
Anene explains that, home environment could be divided into physical, social and abstract environment. It includes the people like parents, siblings and peers. But here, our concern is how one’s total surrounding affects one’s academic performance. It is in this regard that we are going to limit our study to parental academic background and parental economic status, in that home variables is a wide area of variables. However, parents attention, investment and expectation vary across children.
Home Variable And Academic Performance Of Pupils In Health Education
Parental academic background and parental economic status are always known as parental background. According to Muolo (2010) family background refers to all the conditions and circumstances in the family which influence child’s physical, intellectual and emotional development
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Government, parents, teachers and student blame one another for their wards poor academic performance in primary schools, parents blame teachers for lack of dedication to duties, the teachers blame government for poor salaries hence they are poorly motivated, parents also accuse government for not equipping the schools with learning materials, government blames the parents for not doing good home work and the students are blamed for lack of discipline and dedication to their studies.
These mutual blames emerge when one party tries to make provision for her area of responsibility. But even after all these conditions are satisfied, pupil’s academic performance still remains alarming. As a result, research is being made necessary in the area of home variables to determine the possibility of it affecting pupils academic out.

1.3 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of the study is to determine the influence of home variables on academic performance of pupils in Health Education in Ini Local Government Area. Specifically, the study sought to:
- examine the influence of parental academic status and academic performance of pupils in Health Education in Ini Local Government Area.
- determine the influence of parental economics status on pupils’ academic performance in Health Education in Ini Local Government Area.
1.4 Significant of the Study
Finding obtained from the study shall remain or serve as a manual for further researchers on related issues. The study aims at informing the parent of the danger poor home configuration has done to a child’s academic affairs.
The study enlightens the teacher to be adaptive in catering for individual differences putting into account that all fingers are not equal. This suggest the nature of instructional materials teaching method and even teaching strategy to accommodate all manners of learners that teacher must use.
